A beacon of hope – covered by insurance.

When depression is persistent and has proven resistant to medications and therapy, there’s still hope. This drug-free, non-invasive, and FDA-approved treatment offers a unique and powerful path to recovery.

Every health insurance provider and plan accepted at Aster Mental Health covers TMS treatments.

What to Expect

  • During a TMS treatment session, a patient sits comfortably while an electromagnetic coil is placed on the scalp. There is no need for sedatives or anesthesia.

  • Like an MRI, this coil safely delivers repetitive magnetic pulses to specific brain areas that regulate mood and demeanor.

  • These magnetic pulses stimulate neurons at precisely the right depth inside the brain. Over several sessions, it helps alleviate the most debilitating symptoms of depression.

  • TMS is generally very well-tolerated, with minimal side effects compared to other psychiatric interventions.

  • Patients can drive themselves home and resume normal activities immediately following each session at Aster Mental Health.

Note: TMS is not a first-line treatment for depression. Physicians consider TMS when other treatments have proved ineffective or not well-tolerated. Before considering TMS as a treatment option, it is important to consult with a qualified medical professional.

Frequently asked questions
  • What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (or TMS) is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate neurons in the brain to improve symptoms of depression and OCD, and other neurological and psychiatric disorders. Essentially, TMS helps to build and strengthen connections between the parts of the brain that have become depressed.

  • How does TMS work?

During a TMS session, an electromagnetic coil is placed against the scalp. The coil delivers magnetic pulses that revitalize neuroplasticity in the region of the brain involved in mood regulation and depression.

  • What conditions can TMS treat?

TMS is FDA-approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) that has not responded to other treatments and obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD). The FDA has cleared TMS for patients aged 15 years or older.

  • Is TMS safe? Does it hurt?

TMS is considered safe and is well-tolerated. Common side effects include mild headache or scalp discomfort during or after treatment in the first few days of treatment. You can treat this with over-the-counter pain medications such as Tylenol. Serious side effects are rare.

  • Can I do TMS while taking medication?

Generally, yes. You can receive TMS treatments without disrupting your daily activities. Many individuals receive treatment in combination with their existing medications and/or therapy. Your doctor will speak with you about any changes to your medications that they believe are necessary before you start TMS.

  • What can I expect during a TMS treatment session?

During a TMS session, you will be seated in a comfortable chair. The TMS coil will be placed against your scalp, and you will hear a clicking sound and feel a slight tapping sensation at the treatment site as the magnetic pulses are delivered. You will be awake and alert throughout the session, and you can resume your normal activities immediately afterward.

  • How long does a TMS treatment session take?

A typical treatment session lasts 20 – 30 minutes. Treatment is administered five days a week, Monday through Friday, for 36 sessions.

  • What kind of environment is treatment offered in?

Our offices, located in Braintree and Peabody, MA, are designed with you in mind. Our treatment rooms are a calming space where healing and growth can flourish.
